2025 Rat Control Failed in Arkhangelsk; 2026 Plans Announced

Despite two extensive deratization campaigns in Arkhangelsk in 2025, complaints about rat infestations have not ceased.
The fight against rats in Arkhangelsk will continue, and on a much broader scale than before. City authorities have announced a set of measures developed jointly with the Federal Service for Surveillance on Consumer Rights Protection and Human Wellbeing (Rospotrebnadzor) to address the problem.
This week, preliminary treatment of rodent habitats will begin in the Lomonosovsky and Oktyabrsky districts. Deratization will be carried out not only near apartment buildings but also in public areas. For the new phase of rodent extermination, district administrations have signed contracts with the Center for Hygiene and Epidemiology in the Arkhangelsk Region and the Nenets Autonomous Okrug.
“In 2025, comprehensive deratization was carried out twice in Arkhangelsk, but the desired effect was not achieved — complaints about rodent infestations continued to come from some districts,” the city administration acknowledges.
The fight against rats will take place not only in residential neighborhoods but also where the animals may temporarily take refuge: at construction sites and the local landfill.
“Work is underway with management companies and developers, who are required to carry out deratization in areas adjacent to construction sites. Deratization measures are planned along the perimeter of the solid waste landfill to prevent rodent migration during deratization in the central districts,” the city administration reports.
What We Wrote About Rats in the City
In 2025, deratization was conducted twice in Arkhangelsk. Nevertheless, complaints about rats continued to come in from residents to the city administration and Rospotrebnadzor.
Rodents continued to be encountered both on the streets and right inside homes. Some residents believe cats can help with the problem, while others do not trust this method.
The issue of deratization was even raised during the governor«s hotline. At the end of 2025, Alexander Tsybulsky called Dmitry Morev live on air and asked him to respond to the city»s residents.
The large number of rats has made city residents think about what local container sites look like. The company EcoIntegrator explained who should monitor cleanliness near garbage bins.
We also asked an infectious disease specialist how rodents on the streets can be dangerous to humans — read what he answered.
