Last night, Saratov residents could observe, but with difficulty, the aurora borealis. As reported today by the popular local Telegram channel ‘Astronomy for All [Saratov]’, this was hindered by continuous cloudiness.

Yesterday night, a powerful magnetic storm covered the Earth. Thanks to this, auroras were observed not only in areas of the planet adjacent to the North Pole, but even south of Saratov: down to latitude 45 and below. At the same time, over Saratov there was continuous cloudiness, which hindered the view of the aurora.

‘However, the sky in the northern part became red almost to the zenith at least twice (00:42 and 02:29). Since I have already observed the aurora through clouds and know how it looks, I am sure that today it was that,’ noted the channel«s author Yury Kumakov.

He also apologized for the quality of the posted photographs, as he was shooting on a smartphone. Kumakov also invited subscribers to share their photos of the aurora. Another Saratov subscriber«s photo was less impressive: almost nothing was visible on it. The other photos were sent from Krasnodar, Pavlodar (Kazakhstan), and Berlin (Germany).

‘Berlin (at the latitude of Saratov), practically the city center. Photo on a phone handheld. It shone so brightly that it was easily visible to the eye under streetlights,’ wrote subscriber from Germany Ilia Los.

A subscriber notes that Berlin shares a similar latitude with Saratov, where the aurora was observed.
