An 86-year-old Ryazan resident turned to the police after being scammed by fraudsters. A man who claimed to be a law enforcement officer called him and said that his savings could be seized if the banknotes were not declared.
The fraudster told the pensioner to hand over all his money to a «bank courier» who would later bring it back.
The frightened Ryazan resident followed all the instructions and handed over about 1.2 million rubles (approximately $13,200 at current rates) to the courier. A few hours later, the man realized he had been scammed.
Police detained the suspected courier — a 25-year-old resident of the Moscow Region.
According to preliminary investigation information, the young man found a job as a courier in a foreign call center via the internet. He could travel to scammed pensioners, take their money, and transfer it to a specified account, receiving a percentage for himself. The Muscovite is suspected of several such schemes in the capital.
The criminal investigation is ongoing. The young man could face up to 10 years in prison, according to the regional police department.
