Preliminary Cause Named for Kuzbass Care Home Deaths

Law enforcement suspects that errors by management and staff may have led to the deaths of nine people at a psychoneurological care home in Prokopyevsk, Kuzbass. Preliminary, three people died after contracting influenza during a mass outbreak at the facility, the regional investigative committee reported on Thursday, 29 January.

Over recent days, investigators have interviewed staff at the facility and seized documents, including those related to sanitary compliance. It is now being determined whether there is a causal link between staff actions, the spread of influenza, and the deaths.

Preliminary, officials and employees allowed conditions at the facility that contributed to the virus outbreak. Among other things, SanPin (sanitary) rules may have been violated in the building.

According to the committee, since January 23, 46 residents have been infected with influenza type A, all of whom are in the hospital. Three of the patients died due to the virus, and the causes of death for six others are being investigated.

Earlier, our colleagues reported that residents of the facility, including bedridden ones, may have been kept in the cold and fed half-rotten food for several months.

A cardiologist told the editorial team that despite the official cause of death, most died from cardiac complications, which could have been triggered by acute respiratory diseases, acute respiratory viral infections, or influenza, which was detected at the facility.
