Former Omsk police officers sentenced for drug trafficking

In Omsk, two former police officers have been convicted for drug trafficking. Details of the case were shared by the regional investigative committee.
As established during the investigation, the crime was committed by former drug control officer Maxim Sorokin and his father Vyacheslav, a veteran of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MVD). From December 2018 to July 2020, they sold banned substances online. Investigators uncovered over 40 episodes.
«In 2018, the 54-year-old suspect was dismissed from the internal affairs bodies due to length of service, and his 31-year-old son was dismissed in 2020 due to misconduct,» police said.
According to the combined press service of the Omsk Region courts, Vyacheslav was the leader of the group. His son assisted in purchasing, packaging, and placing drugs in hiding places.
The criminals were identified by the internal security officers of the regional Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (UMVD). First, they were taken into custody, and later the court issued a verdict. The police officers were stripped of their ranks and will now go to a strict-regime colony. Maxim Sorokin was sentenced to 16 years, Vyacheslav to 17. Additionally, the perpetrators must pay fines of 2 million and 2.5 million rubles respectively (approximately $27,000 and $34,000 at current rates). The verdict has not yet entered into legal force.
«Earlier, the court issued a verdict for a third accomplice in the crime, whose criminal case materials were separated into separate proceedings. He was sentenced by the court to 8 years of imprisonment to be served in a strict-regime colony,» the investigative committee added.
