St. Petersburg and Leningrad Region Second in Russian Digitalization Ranking
The study showed that companies in the Northwestern Federal District in 2024–2025 significantly increased investments in three key areas: cloud services, intelligent video surveillance, and internet of things (IoT) platform solutions. This allowed the region to take second place in the country for demand for digital business services.
In addition to Moscow, St. Petersburg, and the Leningrad Region, the leaders in digitalization included:
- Krasnodar Krai
- Novosibirsk Region
- Sverdlovsk Region
- Rostov Region
- Republic of Bashkortostan
- Republic of Tatarstan
Investments in intelligent video surveillance grew most dynamically. In St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region, investment volume in this segment increased sixfold over the year. Industrial and logistics enterprises, as well as agricultural organizations, were the most active in implementing such systems.
Demand for internet of things complexes increased by one and a half times. IoT technologies were primarily used in housing and communal services for energy resource accounting, as well as in the financial sector and logistics. Specifically, they were used for operating ATMs, payment terminals, and sensors controlling safety and cargo transportation.
The popularity of cloud solutions continues to grow across Russia. St. Petersburg companies kept up with the national trend, actively choosing virtual machines and backup services. Retailers, processing industries, and representatives of the hotel and restaurant business most often focused on these solutions.
Alexander Solovenchuk, director of MTS in St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region, called the high positions of the regions logical.
Businesses are highly in demand for systems for automation, data collection and accounting, virtual platforms for secure storage and processing of information,he noted.
Thus, last year we deployed comprehensive solutions, including video surveillance and cloud storage, at high-tech cement and construction mix production, as well as on port tugs based in ports from Vyborg to Murmansk and Vladivostok.According to him, the company plans to further develop tools based on artificial intelligence for digitalizing various sectors of the Northwest economy.
The business digitalization level rating was compiled based on the penetration degree of MTS solutions. Analysts compared the investment volumes of regional companies in cloud services, IoT, and intelligent video surveillance over the 2024–2025 period.
