50-Year-Old Omsk Blogger Hits Back at Haters

It seems the internet has been completely taken over by Gen Z: endless reels, challenges, and millions of likes — their territory. But what about those over 50? By many people«s logic, they should settle into a quiet haven, with a dacha and memories of the past. Career done, kids raised, time to retire.

But 50-year-old Omsk resident Alena Rodionova shatters this logic completely. For ten years now, she hasn«t just been living — she»s been running a blog watched by thousands of women. Why would a mature, successful lady compete with young bloggers? How do her husband and children react to her activity, and why do negative comments only spur her on? Read on in our article.

A New Life After Maternity Leave

The heroine of our article is 50. By education, Alena Rodionova is an artist: she graduated from the art department of OmGPU (Omsk State Pedagogical University) with a diploma as an art teacher. True, she never worked a day in a school. But at university, she found another treasure — her future husband Andrei. They«ve been together for 28 years, 26 of them officially married. He, by the way, is not a painter but a jeweler — fine work, just like his wife»s.

With her diploma, the Omsk native went into the furniture business: over several years, she rose from office manager to deputy director. Then came maternity leave. Son Ivan, and three years later, daughter Arina. And after the second maternity leave, she categorically didn«t want to return to the office. That»s how Plan B was born: manicure courses, her own studio, and 15 years of working for herself. Clients came quickly, and along with them — the desire to tell people about her work online.

Alena set up her first two Instagram* accounts almost intuitively. In one — professional tips and behind-the-scenes of a nail master; in the other — lifehacks for managing social media, writing texts, and building a personal brand. Each gained about 1,500 followers. But that was just a warm-up.

«My blog is my stage. I»ve looked into astrology and numerology; I need to lead people and teach them something,« Alena explains her pull toward public life.

Then came 2022. After Meta** was designated as extremist and the social network was blocked in Russia, Alena almost stopped going there. She admits: she didn«t appear for two years at all.

«When everyone started selling courses on how to grow your account — that started right after the block. Polished images appeared, endless »How to make a million?« First, you get drawn in and start beating yourself up. I hated that period. I managed to remove that veil from my eyes and left Instagram*. Now the vibe is different — more real-life content is gaining traction.»

She only returned to social media in 2024. First, she started teaching marketing again, ran face self-massage marathons, and gradually built a new audience. But she quickly realized: the role of an expert in the old format had burned out. Last year, Alena closed both projects and reset to zero. Now her blogger page isn«t about nails or promotion. It»s about life after 50, style, sports, and the hardest thing — self-acceptance.

How Blogging Became a New Career

Every day, Alena turns on the camera. And judging by her attitude, she doesn«t do it for likes but for freedom. Ideally, she would completely shift her income from offline to online. »I won«t be filing nails all my life,» she laughs, «but filming and editing — that»s quite possible.«

She admits that manicure doesn«t appear in her feed.

«You start burning out from every job. I don»t have manicure in my blog because I«m not looking for new clients. I have a core group of people I»ve brought together. I can afford not to adapt to anyone.«

Right now, she has a challenge she set for herself: daily sports on camera. No filters, no hiding — she shows what many are used to hiding: wrinkles, cellulite, «imperfect» sides. And this honest content gathers no less attention than polished images. She motivates others and, at the same time, finds new followers.

«I try everything. I feel like I didn»t do it in my youth — so I«m doing it now,» the heroine laughs.

Her family supports her drive. Her husband and children are modern people, taking social media in stride. But Alena insists: even if a woman has a family, she doesn«t have to dissolve into household chores. So she can drop everything and head to a sanatorium for a couple of days to recharge. And she celebrated her 50th birthday in Vladivostok — the stars (she»s into astrology) suggested that city.

But it wasn«t always like this. She had to fight for her personal boundaries. She didn»t want to live the classic life: work — home — cooking — laundry, with everything on the woman. And her husband had to adjust.

«I had a feeling I was frozen. Just last night, I realized that after 30, I wasn»t living my own life. Then the kids grow up, and you reclaim yourself. You live your life, not the way your husband wants or your kids demand.«

The more viewers, the more discontent. Haters, by her observations, come unexpectedly. She deals with negativity in life simply: she stops communicating. But under the videos, there«s a different atmosphere.

«The main thing — so many men write to a stranger. Guys, what are you doing? I get that women are unsatisfied, but why are you getting involved? I either delete hate comments or leave them to laugh at. I don»t want to waste my energy proving something, though I used to.«

What Women Over 50 Stay Silent About

Alena«s main topic today is the life of a woman after 50. She talks about what many still hide in the closet: menopause, body changes, fears of aging. And she proves: taking care of yourself in adulthood is not shameful, it»s vital. Dressing beautifully, going to the gym, jetting off on trips, starting from scratch — age is not an argument here.

«The blog is about women 45+ and not losing yourself. There was a comment: »Oh, another old lady crawled out.« I»ll never be 30 again, but you«ll turn 50, and you»ll remember me.«

Just a couple of years ago, she herself knew almost nothing about menopause. When she faced changes in her body, she started researching and understood: this can«t be kept silent. Hormonal swings, blood pressure spikes, weight gain, the feeling that your body has become alien — Alena goes through this openly, so others won»t be afraid and will be prepared.

Sports save her. What was just a hobby became a system and a support. Workouts give her energy for work, for experiments, for waking up with interest in the day. But the main thing she«s looking for in life now is a pursuit that will both ignite her and feed her.

«Ideally, I want to live on the shores of the Indian Ocean. I»d like to depend less on offline work, but it shouldn«t be a blog just for money — I can»t do that; I still want to ignite. I want to find my niche that works for me and is interesting to people. I don«t think I»ll be collecting a pension. With our state — the pension is 10,000 rubles (about $120 at current rates). I need to think about how to live after sixty,« the blogger concludes.

And judging by her energy, she«s already started thinking. And at the same time — living in a way that by 60, she»ll have not 10,000 rubles in her account, but an ocean outside her window.
