Volga Ice Thickness Table for Samara and Tolyatti

Fresh data on the thickness of Volga ice near Samara and Tolyatti has been released. This year, due to severe frosts, the thickest ice cover formed off the shores of Avtograd (the auto city, referring to Tolyatti).

«On the left bank of the Volga, near Tolyatti on the Kuybyshev Reservoir, it is 45 centimeters. 500 meters from shore — 40 centimeters. And near Zhigulyovsk there is no ice field. There is water everywhere. As for Samara, the thinnest ice is at Frunze Polyana. There the ice thickness is only 20 centimeters at the shore and 25 in the fairway. At Gavrilova Polyana there is a large polynya (open water),» the Search and Rescue Service of Samara Oblast reported.
In Syzran, within 100 meters of the shore, the ice thickness is 25 centimeters. If you go much further, it is 20 centimeters.
Here is the summary table:
On one hand, the cover is solid — a thickness of at least 10 centimeters (like a thick hardcover book) in fresh water and 15 centimeters in salt water is considered safe for a person.
«But even ice that seems strong and thick at first glance may not support the weight of an adult, especially during temperature fluctuations,» rescuers warned.
And fluctuations are near. February can confidently be called the month of surprises. The last winter month can bring both bitter frosts and spring-like warmth. We publish the February forecast from Samara meteorologists, which includes any temperature — from −46 °C (−51 °F) to +12 °C (54 °F).
