In Tyumen, in-person classes for elementary school students who study in the second shift have been canceled due to abnormally low temperatures.
The city administration announced: «Today, due to low outdoor air temperature, second-shift classes for students in grades 1-4 in Tyumen schools are canceled in person.»
Earlier in the morning, thermometers dropped even lower, leading to class cancellations for students up to grade 9.
The decision to cancel classes depends on a combination of air temperature and wind speed. The following criteria have been established:
  • For elementary school: from -25°C (-13°F) with wind speeds over 2 m/s.
  • For middle school: -30°C (-22°F) and strong wind.
  • Full cancellation: at -35°C (-31°F) and gusty wind.
Classes have also been suspended in the Tyumen municipal district and Tobolsk.
In recent weeks, due to severe frosts, schoolchildren have often stayed home. This does not always happen by official decision — many parents keep their children at home based on their own judgment.
