The Sverdlovsk branch of the Ministry of Emergency Situations (EMERCOM) distributed an emergency weather warning for February 4. On Wednesday, the region expects heavy snow, with some areas experiencing particularly intense snowfall.
“Near the western borders of the region, an atmospheric front will form a cyclone on the night of February 4. It will sow snow along its path northward along the western slopes of the ridge. Heavy precipitation of up to 7–10 millimeters is expected in the west of Sverdlovsk Region. In the east of Sverdlovsk Region, snow will be lighter (1–4 mm). With the departure of the cyclone on February 5, cold air from the European part of Russia will move towards the Urals, and temperatures will drop by 10–12°C (18–22°F),” noted Galina Sheporenko, the chief forecaster of the Urals.
Rescuers are urging residents to exercise caution. Drivers must adhere to traffic rules, maintain speed limits and distance. If caught in a snowstorm on the highway, it is recommended to move to the far right lane, pull over to the shoulder, and come to a smooth stop with hazard lights on. Pedestrians are advised to avoid unstable structures and houses with insecure roofs.
