Meteorologists forecast a sharp cold snap in the Southern Urals over the next 24 hours. According to the Chelyabinsk Hydro-Meteorological Center, nighttime temperatures on February 4 may drop to -33°C (-27°F).
Yekaterina Vykhodtseva, head of the meteorological forecasts department, explained the situation: «We are currently under the influence of a frontal division. The cold front is located in a cyclone, and this cyclone is moving further northeast. In its wake, a cold Arctic air mass is spreading. This air mass will affect us over the next two days.»
  • In Chelyabinsk, nighttime temperatures are expected to be -23… -25°C (-9… -13°F), with daytime on February 5 reaching -15… -17°C (5… 1°F).
  • Across the region, nighttime temperatures are forecast at -21… -26°C (-6… -15°F), and dropping to -33°C (-27°F) in clear areas. Daytime temperatures will be -13… -18°C (9… 0°F), with mountainous areas and lowlands possibly reaching -25°C (-13°F).
The cold spell will be brief. Hydro-meteorological center specialists noted: «Warming is expected by the weekend.»
In January of this year, the region already experienced abnormally frosty weather.
