January 2026 one of the snowiest on record for Voronezh Oblast

Over January 30 and 31, 37 mm of precipitation fell in Voronezh Oblast, accounting for 82% of the monthly norm. This was reported to Voronezh1.ru by the duty meteorologist at the regional Hydrometeorological Center.
For the entire last month, total precipitation reached 97 mm, which is 2.2 times (221%) higher than the average monthly norm of 42 mm. Snow depth in the city of Voronezh is 38 cm (15 inches). Across the oblast, it is distributed unevenly: the minimum depth is 16 cm (6 inches), but in most districts, snowdrifts range from 16–38 cm (6–15 inches).
The past month has already entered the observation record books. The current 97 mm of precipitation makes this period one of the snowiest in recent decades. For comparison: in January 2024, 85 mm fell; in 2016—88 mm; in 1985—90 mm; and in 1968, 95 mm of precipitation was recorded.
Alongside the heavy snowfall, abnormal frosts have settled in the region. According to the meteorologist, the regime of abnormally cold weather has been in effect since February 1 and will last at least until the 5th. The current average daily air temperature is 7–12 degrees Celsius (13–22°F) below the climatic norm. Further strengthening of the frost is expected: for February 3, temperatures of -23 to -28°C (-9 to -18°F) are forecast, and in some places down to -33°C (-27°F). This will be one of the coldest days of this period.
«This is not the norm [this amount of precipitation], but it cannot be called an anomaly either. The precipitation we had was brought to us by a southwestern cyclone from the Balkans. From February 1 to 5, we will be under the influence of a ridge from the Scandinavian cold anticyclone,» a representative from the Voronezh Hydrometeorological Center told Voronezh1.ru.
Meteorologists expect only a slight temperature increase by the coming Saturday, February 7.
