Heavy Snowfall Paralyzes Volgograd, Disrupts Transport

On the night of January 2-3, a heavy snowfall covered all of Volgograd. The intensity of the precipitation was such that in less than 8 hours, almost all roads were completely snowed in, and the effects of the blizzard are felt not only outdoors but also indoors.

Recall that the precipitation began yesterday evening, already paralyzing traffic on city and suburban roads: readers reported that cars stuck in snowdrifts had to be pulled out by tractors, but due to black ice, the victims of the harsh winter only increased.

That same evening, the governor of Volgograd Region decided at a meeting to temporarily restrict traffic on the federal highway. The roads were closed at 10:30 p.m., and promised to be opened after a «special order,» which has not been officially announced yet.

However, the situation with transport accessibility did not improve even in the morning: while road services managed to somehow clear key highways, it was almost impossible to get out of courtyards. According to Yandex Maps, traffic jams in the city reached a score of 10 points. All this, however, also affected the cost of taxi rides.

It was difficult not only for motorists but also for pedestrians, especially those living outside the center of Volgograd. Under the thick layer of snow, which itself posed an obstacle to movement, lies a dense icy crust — walking on the streets, especially uncleared ones, should be done with extreme caution.

Moreover, complaints about cold in apartments have not gone away: with the onset of the first frosts, outraged citizens are again demanding answers from the authorities. Among them are residents of dormitory No. 1a in Veselaya Balka, Volgograd.

— The situation is critical, water in the plumbing is freezing in the house. They are forcing residents out of their only home.

However, in «Heat Supply Concessions,» they clarified that from their side, the resource to the dormitory is being supplied properly.

— The heat supply was cut off on the internal house networks. It is necessary to contact the management company.
