Forecasters warn of minus 42 cold in Transbaikal Krai

An invasion of a cold air mass with increased wind and lower temperature is expected at the start of the week in Transbaikal Krai. At the same time, temperatures will be uneven, reported on February 2 on the website of the Chita Hydrometeorological Center.

The minimum air temperature will range from -20…-25 °C (-4…-13 °F) to -28…-33 °C (-18…-27 °F), in northern areas dropping to -42° (-44 °F). The predominant daytime air temperature will be -15…-20 °C (5…-4 °F), in the northern half of the krai -22…-27 °C (-8…-17 °F). On February 3, in the southern half of the krai, in some places -6…-11 °C (21…12 °F).

The wind will be northerly, moderate. In the southern half of the krai, gusts will reach 15-20 meters per second. Light snow will occur in places in the western and northern areas.

In the second half of the week, frosty weather will set in. Nighttime temperatures over most of the krai will drop to -33…-38 °C (-27…-36 °F), in northern areas — to -43…-48 °C (-45…-54 °F), daytime air temperature — -19…-24 °C (-2…-11 °F), in northern areas — -27…-32 °C (-17…-26 °F).

A very warm day came to Chita on February 2 — daytime temperature was -3° (27 °F). At night it was about -14…-20° (7…-4 °F). But frosts will return from February 3.

The average monthly temperature in February in Transbaikal Krai is expected to be 1 degree below the climatic norm, but there will also be sharp changes.
