February can confidently be called a month of surprises. In the last winter month, there can be both severe frosts and spring-like warmth. We publish the characterization of February from Samara forecasters.
«According to long-term observation data, the average monthly temperature in February is -7.6…12.9°C. Absolute minimum air temperatures have been recorded in the range of 38–46° of frost (-38°C to -46°C, or -36°F to -51°F) (in 1929, 1930, 1951, 1954, 1956, 1967, 1976, 1994, 2006, 2011). Maximum air temperatures in 1987, 1990, 1999, 2000, 2002 reached 7–12°C (45°F to 54°F),» said the Privolzhskoye UGMS (Volga Region Hydrometeorological Service) (they provided general data for the Samara, Ulyanovsk, Penza, Saratov, and Orenburg regions).
According to meteorologists, total precipitation in February is 18–43 mm. Snow cover in open areas reaches 19–27 cm by the end of the month, sometimes 44–52 cm.
«From 1 to 3 days of glaze ice are observed, somewhat more with rime (3–7 days). Blizzards occur on average from 3 to 8 days, in some years up to 10–12 days. The prevailing wind direction is from the south,» the forecasters also reported.
The weather in the last winter month has already begun testing the residents of the Samara Region. So, on February 3, the region was covered with snow, and on the morning of February 4, quite severe frosts struck.
