40-degree frost to hit Chelyabinsk Oblast

A storm warning has been issued in Chelyabinsk Oblast due to abnormal frosts. Tonight, according to the hydrometeorological center, temperatures in the region will drop to -40°C (-40°F).

The forecast indicates persistent cold advection leading to temperature anomalies in Chelyabinsk Oblast.

«In the south, light snow in some areas. In separate districts, ice and frost,» added the forecasters.

Thus, on the night of January 22, temperatures across the oblast are expected to range from -29 to -34°C (-20 to -29°F), dropping to -35 to -40°C (-31 to -40°F) during clear spells, and in the south and extreme west of the region, down to -26°C (-15°F). During the day on Thursday, forecasters predict -24 to -29°C (-11 to -20°F), and in the south and extreme west, down to -17°C (1°F).

In Chelyabinsk, there won«t be extreme frosts, but it will cool down significantly. Thus, at night, temperatures are promised to be -30 to -32°C (-22 to -26°F), and during the day, -25 to -27°C (-13 to -17°F).

It is expected that the frosty weather will persist in the region for several days.

«From January 21 to 26, intense cold advection combined with nocturnal cooling will lead to a sharp drop in air temperatures and, consequently, to another temperature anomaly,» forecasters warned at the beginning of the week.

According to the forecast, temperatures down to -40°C (-40°F) will hold for all the coming nights.

Recall that last week, abnormal frosts already occurred in the Southern Urals. In some places, thermometers recorded up to -45°C (-49°F). Over three days, school lessons were canceled then. Taxi drivers demanded extra pay for working in the cold.
