Voronezh snowstorm spikes taxi fares, stranding commuters

A blizzard struck Voronezh at the end of the workday on Friday, January 30. By 6 p.m., traffic jams were already at an 8-point level, and about a dozen accidents had occurred in the city — and those were only the major ones. As a result, taxi prices soared.

It is now impossible to take a taxi ride for less than 700 rubles (about $9 at current rates) in Voronezh: even a trip to the next street will cost almost 800 rubles (about $11). A journey to the other bank will cost over 1000 rubles (about $13 and up).
Trips within the right bank also cost over a thousand rubles (about $13 and up). And if you need to get from the center or from the Southwestern to the Northern microdistrict, you«ll have to pay more than 1200 rubles (about $16). Not to mention the »Comfort« and higher tariffs — prices there are simply sky-high. Moreover, the trip will take about an hour.
According to weather forecasters, the snowfall will continue in Voronezh on Saturday, January 31 as well. Then it will be replaced by severe frosts of around -30 degrees Celsius (-22°F).
