Unmanned Vehicles for Road Construction in Rostov Region

A testing ground for unmanned road equipment could appear in Volgodonsk on the basis of the «ROSDORNII» branch.
Rostov Region is considering the possibility of using unmanned vehicles in road construction and diagnostics. This prospect was announced by the deputy governor – the region«s transport minister, Alena Belikova, during a meeting with the general director of the Federal Autonomous Institution »ROSDORNII« (Russian Road Research Institute).
In the region, the research institute has two branches – in Rostov-on-Don and Volgodonsk. It is on the basis of the latter that a testing ground for unmanned road machines could be organized.
‘Using the potential of the Volgodonsk branch of «ROSDORNII» to create a site for unmanned road equipment will allow testing advanced solutions in real conditions and accelerating their implementation on the road network,’ Belikova noted.
The regional government clarifies that the introduction of unmanned vehicles is aimed at increasing the accuracy of pavement quality control, reducing risks during equipment operation, and accelerating the adoption of other innovations in the road industry.
Separately, it is worth noting the large-scale road works being carried out this year on the M-4 «Don» highway. This concerns the section from the 933rd to the 1024th kilometer – from Kamensk-Shakhtinsky to the Aksay bypass. Their completion is scheduled for 2027, after which travel on this section of the highway will become toll-based.
