Two new trams begin service in Irkutsk

Two new trams have entered service in Irkutsk. They started operating today on routes No. 1 «Volzhskaya» — «Studgorodok» and No. 3 «Volzhskaya» — «Tsentralny Rynok», the press service of the mayor«s office reported.

As Sergey Mayok, director of the municipal unitary enterprise Irkutskgortrans, said, the bodies of modernized trams model KTM 71-605 arrived at the enterprise at the end of last year. During this time, specialists installed them on bogies, conducted commissioning work together with the manufacturer, and then the vehicles passed technical inspection and test runs. After all checks, the trams were allowed to carry passengers.

The new trams are adapted for passengers with limited mobility: they are equipped with ramps and a variable floor height. The vehicles also have a modern traction drive control system and automatic fault diagnostics. All information about the operation of units and assemblies is displayed on instruments in the driver«s cab.

Now there are six such trams in Irkutsk. The first similar tram appeared in 2023, another the following year. They were installed on bogies assembled in-house, which resulted in significant savings. For more details on how that works, the editors of IrCity reported in this article.
