Three-level 'monster' interchange planned for Yekaterinburg outskirts

In 2026, road workers will continue the reconstruction of Yekaterinburg Ring Road (EKAD) — the main transport artery encircling Yekaterinburg. The ring road will be expanded from the Tyumen Tract to the Rezhevskoy Tract. This refers to the so-called northern semi-ring, which is narrow and outdated.

The reconstruction from the 10th to the 24th kilometer of EKAD will be carried out according to the same standards that were previously applied on the southern semi-ring. According to the regional road administration, lane width will be 3.75 meters, shoulders — more than three meters. The total area of the land plot where construction work will take place will exceed 200 hectares.

Overall, the reconstruction of the northern semi-ring is planned in four stages, the implementation of which will take several years. One of the most notable sections will be the intersection of EKAD with the Berezovsky Tract. There, the first three-level interchange in the Urals will be built.

The section of EKAD from the 10th to the 24th kilometer, which is to be reconstructed, was built in 1998 according to the design of the Kiev branch of the enterprise «SoyuzDorproekt», following standards for category II roads. Under current conditions, the road has only two lanes with asphalt concrete pavement. It can no longer handle the growing car traffic.

The appearance and technical parameters of the future interchange were developed by the design company «UralDorTekhnologii». Its specialists spoke about some features of this facility, which will be built at the intersection of EKAD with the Berezovsky Tract.

What are the three levels for
At the first level, the intersection of vehicle flows from EKAD towards Yekaterinburg and Berezovsky (and back) will be organized through the construction of a traffic circle;
the second level will be intended for flows moving along the Berezovsky Tract;
the third level (the highest) will be intended for flows moving along EKAD.
“During the design of the interchange, the construction of eight driveways and two U-turns was provided for. Measures for arranging existing pedestrian paths are also included,” clarified in the information from the design company «UralDorTekhnologii».
The upper transport viaduct (along EKAD) was designed with a length of 566 meters and a width of 18 meters. The span structure will be made of special reinforced concrete multifunctional beams. The length of the overpass along the Berezovsky Tract (second level) will be 200 meters.
Also provided is the installation of reinforced concrete parapet and metal barriers. According to the designers« plan, the reconstruction of the EKAD section will create convenient access to industrial facilities and logistics centers, as well as ease traffic jams and reduce the number of accidents.
In previous years, the road around Yekaterinburg was finally fully encircled, and its southern and eastern parts were expanded. During 2024, work was carried out to the west of the metropolis, where a section from the Perm Tract to the approach to the village of Medny was expanded.
