Sobyanin Announces Blue Metro Line Extension to Vostochny

On 21 July, it became known that the Arbatsko-Pokrovskaya line would be extended to the Vostochny district. This was personally announced by Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin during the completion of the second running tunnel between the Shchelkovskaya and Golyanovo stations. This was reported by RIA Novosti.

«Residents of Vostochny have long asked to extend this line beyond Golyanovo to the Vostochny district, which lies beyond the MKAD,» the agency quotes Sergei Sobyanin. «And, of course, the transport situation there is extremely difficult because residents have to get onto the Shchelkovskoye Highway, which is very congested and jammed in the mornings. And, of course, it is important to extend this line to the Vostochny district. We have made that decision.»

The mayor also added that extending the Arbatsko-Pokrovskaya line would not delay the opening of the Golyanovo metro station.

«We will simultaneously start tunneling towards Vostochny,» Sergei Sobyanin clarified to RIA Novosti.

The Arbatsko-Pokrovskaya line with 22 stations is already the longest branch — 45 km. It connects 14 districts with a total population of 1.5 million people. And the daily passenger flow on the Arbatsko-Pokrovskaya metro line is over 750,000 passengers.

The press service of the Moscow Construction Complex confirmed to MSK1.RU the information about plans to extend the Arbatsko-Pokrovskaya line.

Earlier we reported that metro authorities had long refused the idea of laying a metro towards Balashikha. The settlement of Vostochny is surrounded by the territory of the suburban city, but legally is part of Moscow.
