Novosibirsk tackles fourth bridge traffic by targeting violators

The fourth bridge in Novosibirsk, which opened recently, has led to increased traffic congestion in the area.
The authorities of Novosibirsk plan to solve the problem with traffic jams caused by the fourth bridge, which have started to form on both the right and left banks. Details were revealed at a press conference held today, January 27, at the Interfax agency.
Regional Transport Minister Anatoly Kostylevsky noted that traffic jams have started to form on Voennaya and Ippodromskaya streets. Currently, work is underway to combat traffic jams on Truda Square.
‘We changed several signs, several traffic schemes. There are two schemes in the works. One is interim, and the second is radical. We will launch the first one first, see the results. In the afternoon, we have a meeting with the traffic police (GAI), we will consider options to minimize traffic jams,’ noted Anatoly Kostylevsky.
First Deputy Mayor of Novosibirsk Joseph Kodalaev added that traffic violations are often the cause of jams. For example, at the intersection of Ippodromskaya and Voennaya, normal traffic is hindered by those making a left turn at the intersection. On average, eight cars accumulate per cycle. Meanwhile, the green light on Voennaya lasts only 30 seconds, and 14 of those are spent clearing out the violators.
‘Although one doesn’t have to be a violator. One can make a U-turn on Ippodromskaya. The detour is about two kilometers — it takes less than two minutes,’ the vice mayor believes.
It is also reported that on the left bank, the problem arises from drivers coming from Shirokaya Street who try to make a U-turn at the intersection with Stanislavsky Street towards the Dimitrovsky Bridge. Although the permitted direction for them is straight onto Vatutina Street. Currently, the traffic organization project is being updated, and they plan to install photo and video recording cameras on these sections.
At the beginning of 2026, Novosibirsk residents had accumulated questions about the fourth bridge: what are the speed limits related to, why are speeding violations not yet being fined, and was it worth opening it unfinished. We delve into this in this article.
