At the end of January, a sudden thaw hit Volgograd, severely degrading the condition of the city«s main roads. Local drivers are already assessing potential costs for repairing car suspensions damaged by the resulting potholes.

According to residents, one of the most problematic routes is the Third Longitudinal Highway. «From Nezhdanova Street onwards towards the Tractor District, it»s not a road but just a slalom course. Potholes are appearing literally before our eyes,« Volgograd residents state.

The Second Longitudinal Highway has also been severely affected. On the section from Ardatovskaya Street, where trucks often travel, only the far left lane remains relatively intact. On Nezhdanova Street, in the right lane, it is practically impossible for cars with low clearance to move, which worsens traffic jams.

Residents of the Krasnoarmeysky District separately complain about the deplorable condition of the road surface on the bridge over the Volga-Don Shipping Canal, despite existing restrictions for freight transport.

A query has been sent to the Volgograd administration regarding what measures will be taken for prompt asphalt repair and elimination of the deepest potholes. Previously, the municipal institution «Komdorstroi» (MU «Komdorstroi») announced a search for a contractor to repair four sections of the Longitudinal highways, for which about a billion rubles (approximately $10 million at current rates) is planned to be allocated.
