Direct Train Service from Samara to Ulyanovsk Under Consideration

Residents of Samara have been asking for a direct train to Ulyanovsk for several years. Getting to this city by car or bus is not always convenient, especially in winter.

«Transportation of passengers on the Samara–Ulyanovsk route is possible if there is a transport order secured by funds in the budgets of the Samara and Ulyanovsk regions to compensate for carriers« lost income. This route is proposed by the Kuibyshev Railway to the authorities of the subjects as promising for development,» said Vyacheslav Dmitriev, head of the Kuibyshev Railway.

He also clarified the features of the project«s implementation:

«Given the lack of electrification on the Syzran I – Ulyanovsk-Central section, rolling stock with autonomous traction is necessary for organizing suburban railway communication. Currently, a diesel train DP2D has been formed, consisting of a TEP70BS locomotive and modified (non-motor) cars from an EP2DM electric train.»

As reported by the head of the Kuibyshev Railway, the delivery of diesel trains DP2D is planned no earlier than 2028.

The idea of launching a train from Samara to Ulyanovsk is not new. It was discussed a year ago as well.
