10-kilometer traffic jam paralyzes highway near Volgograd
The R228 federal highway from Syzran to Saratov to Volgograd was blocked by a traffic jam stretching ten kilometers. The congestion formed near the bridge over the Golyaya River close to the settlement of Gorny Balykley.
Local residents point to the extremely poor condition of the road surface on the crossing. Because of this, drivers are forced to move at minimal speeds.
«The road there is so bad that if you drive fast, you»ll leave your car right there. So everyone is crawling along like turtles,« explained one eyewitness.
It was previously reported that damage to the bridge was a result of winter rains in January, and its condition was captured on video.
The Federal State Institution «Upravleniye avtomobil»nykh dorog Nizhne-Volzhskoye« (Lower Volga Highway Administration), responsible for maintaining this route, stated they are aware of the problem and plan to fix it as soon as weather conditions allow. Specific dates for the start of work have not yet been announced.
