Should You Swim in the Volga near Samara?

This week in Samara Oblast promises to be hot — up to +33°C (91°F). Summer is in full swing, and many are heading to the water. We tell you where it is most comfortable to swim now and whether you should worry about the bloom.
The Volga continues to warm. According to the Privolzhsky Hydrometeorological Center (Volga Region weather service):
in Syzran (Samara Oblast) the water has warmed to +25°C (77°F) (Saratov Reservoir);
near Tolyatti (Samara Oblast) — +24°C (75°F) (Kuybyshev Reservoir);
in Samara — +23°C (73°F) (Saratov Reservoir).
These are already comfortable values for swimming. The optimal temperature is considered to be from +22°C (72°F). For comparison: in the Black Sea off Sochi, the water is also +24°C (75°F) now.
The heat continues, so the water will become even warmer.
But there is an unpleasant nuance — the Volga has begun to bloom. Due to the heat and polluted water from agricultural runoff, blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) are actively multiplying. Nitrogen and phosphorus from fertilizers create an ideal nutrient medium for them.
The bloom is especially noticeable on the right bank. The water turns green and loses transparency. This is a natural process, but swimming in such water is not always pleasant or safe.
Specialists recommend swimming only at equipped beaches. There, the water is tested, the bottom is surveyed, and lifeguards are on duty. On «wild» beaches, there is a risk of encountering dangerous areas or dealing with the consequences of the bloom.
