Northern orange disappearing, but on sale in Tyumen
This is one of the rare and useful berries found in our forests and in the North.
Cloudberries are very scarce this year in Tyumen forests. According to locals, unstable weather and heat are to blame. The berries ripened quickly and are already past their prime. Even experienced foragers cannot fill whole buckets of this «bog amber» because the supply is limited.

«There are very few cloudberries this year. They are so small and already spoiling in places. For example, we went to check on them, and the berries were green, but a week later when we came back, they were overripe. Apparently, the heat finished them off; I think it»s just impossible to pick a lot,« Olga Kurochkina from Tyumen told 72.RU.

Cloudberry is a perennial herbaceous plant of the Rosaceae family, a close relative of raspberries and blackberries. It is often called the «royal berry», «bog amber», or «northern orange» for its unique taste and healing properties.
Cloudberry prefers a cold, temperate climate. It can be found in northern regions: tundra, forest-tundra, swampy forests, peat bogs, mossy areas, and along the shores of water bodies. But the berry struggles with heat; it can dry out.
In Tyumen forests, cloudberries usually bear fruit from roughly mid-July to the end of August. However, the timing is heavily influenced by weather. Sometimes abnormal heat can alter the schedule. As a result, the berries not only ripen early but sometimes dry out, even on the bush.
Cloudberries are currently being sold online. There aren«t many listings, but they can be found. Most often, the berries are available from the northern districts of Tyumen Oblast.
«We sell frozen cloudberries and jam. Jam, 0.5 kg — 1,500 rubles (approximately $17 at current rates). Frozen berries, 0.5 kg — 1,500 rubles (approximately $17 at current rates). We ship to other regions,» states one of the ads.
On average, the ready-made or frozen product can be bought for 800 to 1,200 rubles per kilogram (approximately $9 to $13 at current rates).

Olga Kurochkina from Tyumen found black chanterelles in the forest. They are rare in the forests of our region and those bordering Tyumen Oblast. These forest delicacies with a refined taste are known far beyond Russia. In Finland they are called «black horn», in Germany — the ominous «trumpet of the dead», and in France — «trumpet of death». In England, on the contrary, they have been given the poetic name «horn of plenty». In Russia, this mushroom is better known to specialists as the horn of plenty (Craterellus cornucopioides).
According to Tyumen berry pickers, there were a lot of wild strawberries in the local forests this season. This treat grew on all routes in our region and on the borders with other oblasts. The berry harvest, according to locals, was marred by insects, including ubiquitous mosquitoes. Despite this, many residents boasted of whole buckets of wild strawberries. Don«t believe it?
