Hot as Sochi, Green as Swamp: Volga Swim?

Temperatures in Samara Region are set to hit +33°C (+91°F), making Volga waters warm—up to +25°C (+77°F) in places—but a cyanobacteria bloom turns the river green. Find out where it's safest to swim and what to watch out for.

This week in Samara Region promises to be hot—up to +33 °C (+91 °F). Summer is in full swing, and many are drawn to the water. We tell you where swimming is most comfortable right now and whether you should worry about the bloom.

The Volga continues to warm. According to the Privolzhsky Gidromettsentr (Volga Region Hydrometeorological Center):

In Syzran, the water has warmed to +25 °C (+77 °F) (Saratov Reservoir);
Near Tolyatti — +24 °C (+75 °F) (Kuybyshev Reservoir);
In Samara — +23 °C (+73 °F) (Saratov Reservoir).

These are already comfortable swimming values. The optimal temperature is considered to be from +22 °C (+72 °F). For comparison, the Black Sea near Sochi is also currently +24 °C (+75 °F).

The heat continues, so the water will get even warmer.

But there is an unpleasant nuance—the Volga has begun to bloom. Due to the heat and contaminated runoff from agricultural land entering the river, blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) are actively multiplying. Nitrogen and phosphorus from fertilizers create an ideal nutrient medium for them.

The bloom is especially noticeable on the right bank. The water turns green and loses transparency. This is a natural process, but swimming in such water is not always pleasant or safe.

Experts recommend swimming only at equipped beaches. There the water is tested, the bottom is checked, and lifeguards are on duty. On «wild» beaches, there is a risk of encountering dangerous areas or experiencing the consequences of the bloom.
