Drought ruins mushroom harvest in Arkhangelsk Oblast
While some residents of Arkhangelsk Oblast collect mushrooms by the basketful, others get far less pleasure from a trip to the forest: the harvest has rotted due to several sunny days without rain. Finding clean mushrooms last weekend proved literally impossible for some.
«We went to the forest on 19 July. The forest is so dry, you walk — the moss crackles underfoot like dry instant noodles. All mushrooms are rotten or wormy. We walked around different proven spots. Usually we collect birch boletes, saffron milk caps, porcini. We didn«t find any of them. Only slippery jacks, and very few. I hope the rains will do their job and mushrooms will appear. But for now, there»s no point wasting time and gas. By the way, there are plenty of strawberries in the forest. So the trip wasn«t in vain,» shares a reader of 29.ru from Plesetsk District.
Another reader, Svetlana, visited a forest near Arkhangelsk on 18 July and encountered a similar picture: mushrooms seemed to be there, but there was no point in collecting them.
«You walk, see a mushroom: it stands beautiful, firm, not overgrown. You pick it, and it«s eaten through. I found two mushrooms that seemed clean, broke the cap — no worms or tunnels. But already on the way home, little white worms crawled out, I even had to throw those away. In the end, I came home with a handful of blueberries and without mushrooms.»
