The most dangerous home manicure habit is peeling off gel polish, which can damage the nail«s top layer.

Doing a manicure at home seems simple enough: remove the old coating, treat the cuticle, file the nails and, if desired, apply polish again. Social media adds dozens of ways to strengthen nails — from soaking baths to iodine and lemon. But some home experiments can produce very different results from what you hoped for. The main danger is damage to the nail plate itself.

Treating nails too deeply with a file or e-file can thin the nail plate, causing soreness and sensitivity.

Zara Suleymanova, head and top master of the Tyumen studio «Tvoe Mesto» (Your Place), explained which mistakes are most often made during home manicures, what they can lead to, and whether it is really possible to grow strong nails on your own.

A thick layer of gel polish cures poorly in the lamp, so the coating can wrinkle, bubble and peel.

Why you shouldn«t peel off gel polish

Brittleness, discoloration, deep grooves and nail separation are reasons to see a dermatologist or podologist.

One of the most common mistakes is trying to simply tear off the old coating. The temptation is especially strong once the gel polish has already started to lift at the edges. However, part of the nail plate can come off along with the material.
«When you peel off gel polish, the top layer of the nail itself often comes off with it. This injures the plate: it thins, becomes brittle, may start to split, and roughness appears,» Zara Suleymanova explains.
Working too aggressively with a file or e-file is no less dangerous. In an attempt to completely remove the material, you can file into the nail itself. The consequences are increased sensitivity and soreness, and the risk of cracks may also rise.
Caution is also needed when treating the cuticle. Cutting too deep or too often raises the likelihood of inflammation. The master advises acting more gently: carefully push back the cuticle and treat it, and use oil or cream between procedures. Without regular moisturizing, the skin becomes drier and further care becomes more difficult.
Tool cleanliness is a separate issue. Even a small skin injury can become an entry point for bacteria.
«If tools are not sterilized, bacteria multiply on them. With micro-damage, they easily penetrate the tissues, which can lead to inflammation or infection,» the master warns.
Why home gel polish peels off
Mistakes can be made not only while removing the coating but also when applying a new one. One of the main problems is insufficient preparation of the nail plate. Before gel polish, it is important to remove flaking keratinized particles and thoroughly degrease the nail. Leftover moisture, oil and dust worsen the material«s adhesion to the surface, so the coating may begin to lift.
Another common mistake is too thick a layer of gel polish. It seems this can produce a dense color faster, but the result may be the opposite.
«A dense layer cures worse in the lamp, can wrinkle, form bubbles and eventually peel off. It is better to do two thin layers,» Zara Suleymanova advises.
It is also important to follow the polymerization time specified in the material«s instructions. If the coating is under-cured, it will not polymerize properly, which can lead to further wear problems.
Taken together, home manicure mistakes can lead to thinning, brittleness and splitting of the nail plate. Nails may become more sensitive to water and household chemicals, and the coating may chip and peel. In addition, injuries and poor hygiene increase the risk of infection. The master names onycholysis — separation of the nail plate from the nail bed — as one of the most serious consequences.
Can you really strengthen nails at home
That said, there is no need to give up home care. According to Zara Suleymanova, it is entirely possible to make nails stronger and grow them at home. There is simply no single miracle product for this.
«It»s not magic but systematic work. Don«t look for one magic remedy. Success lies in a combination: gentle care, protection from aggressive factors, a balanced diet and patience,» the master says.
You can start with something simple — protect your hands from prolonged contact with water and household chemicals by using gloves, and apply a moisturizing cream after washing. For home manicures, Zara advises choosing a glass file or a tool with a fine abrasive — around 240–320 grit.
Care can include cuticle massage and soaking baths. The master suggests using sea salt, olive oil or herbal infusions, such as chamomile and calendula. Such procedures are enough once or twice a week for 10–15 minutes.
There are also ready-made products for home care — oils, serums and strengthening polishes. At the same time, the cuticle must be regularly cleared of keratinized cells, but this should be done carefully, without damaging the skin.
What we eat matters to nails too
The condition of nails depends not only on external care. Zara Suleymanova also draws attention to the diet. Nails consist mainly of keratin, so the body needs nutrients involved in forming and maintaining their structure.
The master advises including eggs, oily fish, red meat and liver, pumpkin seeds, oatmeal and almonds in the diet. However, she does not recommend prescribing vitamin supplements on your own just because nails have become brittle.
«If a deficiency is suspected — for example, nails break or split badly — it is better to discuss taking supplements with a doctor. You shouldn»t prescribe them to yourself,« Zara notes.
Iodine, lemon and permanent gel polish: what not to believe
Home recipes promising to speed up nail growth or make nails noticeably stronger regularly appear on social media. Popular tips include applying pure iodine to the plate or making baths with baking soda and lemon. Zara Suleymanova considers such methods myths.
At the same time, home care has its limits. If nails constantly split and break, have changed color, deep grooves have appeared or the plate has begun to separate from the nail bed, it is no longer worth limiting yourself to oils and baths.
«In that case, it is better to see a dermatologist or podologist. A specialist will help find the cause — sometimes changes may be linked to deficiencies, endocrine disorders or infection — and select the necessary treatment,» Zara Suleymanova concluded.
Another common belief is that gel polish by itself inevitably ruins nails if worn constantly. The master also considers this claim incorrect. What matters far more is how the coating is applied and removed and whether the nail plate is injured in the process.
