Novosibirsk Oblast has begun preparing for the flood season after an abnormally snowy winter, the regional government reported.
From February 25 to March 20, an interagency commission will inspect 19 hydraulic structures in 13 districts most susceptible to flooding. Particular attention will be paid to four water-protection dams, on whose condition the safety of entire settlements depends. Commission specialists will assess the durability of the structures, the functionality of equipment, and water levels in ponds.
At the end of March, the West Siberian Hydrometeorological Service (UGMS) will conduct an expedition in the Altai Mountains to ensure accurate flood forecasting.
To combat ice jams on rivers, the Regional Center for Civil Defense, Emergencies, and Fire Safety will prepare blasting operations.
Municipalities have already formed reserves for rapid response. Additional temporary hydrological posts have been installed on water bodies. Residents in risk zones will be warned via municipal centralized warning systems.
On January 16, NGS reported that a record amount of snow fell in Novosibirsk this winter season — the depth in the city reaches 75 centimeters (29.5 inches).
