Nikitin: Hockey region, football survival

Gleb Nikitin spoke about two popular sports in the Nizhny Novgorod region. He called the region a hockey region but added that he believes in the success of the region«s football. The governor»s interview was published on the Match TV website.

«It»s just a fact — we are certainly a hockey region. We are working very actively on this, we are not giving up. I believe that football will also become a successful sport for us. For now, we have been surviving in the top division in recent years. On one hand, this situation is a bit tiresome. On the other hand, we should be glad that we are surviving. This year, we are also doing everything to survive,« Gleb Nikitin told Match TV.

He described Nizhny Novgorod hockey as «bright and daring», having incredible success in terms of media presence. According to the governor, HC Torpedo is ready to aim for the Gagarin Cup. It is planned that the Nizhny Novgorod hockey players will start the 2026/2027 season at a new ice arena. Construction of the sports complex is almost complete.

Torpedo is in sixth place in the KHL standings. The day before, the team snatched a victory over HC Admiral.
