Arkhangelsk to Host Flying Disc Tournament 'Opleukha'

A tournament in ultimate frisbee — a flying disc sport — will be held in Arkhangelsk. According to the organizers, such an event is being held in the city for the first time.

Ultimate frisbee is a low-contact sport with a flying disc. The goal is to catch the disc in the opponent«s end zone. However, running with the disc is not allowed.

The tournament in Arkhangelsk has been named «Opleukha».

«We are organizing the tournament in a hat format. This means that players apply individually and are then randomly assigned to teams. We hold the competition in winter. And what is the winter hat of the Pomors called? Opleukha!» explained one of the organizers, Bogdan Chadromtsev, regarding the choice of name.

The opleukha hat can be seen on the Obelisk of the North near the regional government building.

«We recently registered the Pomor Flying Disc Federation, and this is the first interregional competition in Arkhangelsk. Out-of-town guests will come to our tournament: for example, there will be a world champion in ultimate frisbee. We want to introduce them to the local culture, so on the event»s social media we use words in the Pomor dialect, we baked a «kozulya» [traditional pastry] for each participant, among the prizes will be an opleukha hat, and the teams are named after districts of Arkhangelsk,« Bogdan Chadromtsev, president of the Pomor Flying Disc Federation, told 29.RU.

The tournament will take place on 8 February at the «Pobeda» sports complex from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Spectators can watch the games for free, but must bring a change of shoes.
