Religious Procession in Chita, Roads Closed

On July 21, a religious procession dedicated to the veneration of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God and the patronal feast of the Kazan Cathedral will take place in Chita, according to the Chita City Administration’s channel on Max.

Butina from Amurskaya to Petrovskaya;

Petrovskaya from Butina to Leningradskaya;

Leningradskaya from Petrovskaya to Amurskaya;

Amurskaya from Leningradskaya to Stolyarova;

Stolyarova from Amurskaya to Lenina;

Lenina from Stolyarova to Ostrovskogo.

On the 1862 plan of Chita, the space where Decembrists Square is now located was designated as “square for a parish church.” In 1866, a wooden church was built there in the name of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God, assigned to the Michael the Archangel Cathedral. In 1894, the Michael the Archangel Cathedral temporarily moved into that church, and the square became known as Mikhailovskaya. Simultaneously, it began to be called Old Cathedral Square, because by that time land had already been allocated for the construction of a new cathedral — Alexander Nevsky Cathedral — where Lenin Square now stands.

At the end of the 1930s, the church was demolished. At that time, Old Cathedral Square was given a new name — Decembrists Square. The renaming was timed to coincide with the 125th anniversary of the Decembrist revolt on Senate Square.
