Why the Silent Treatment Hurts More Than Scandals

Should you say everything or take a pause? That is the question.
Avoiding arguments in relationships is impossible, but what matters is how we resolve them. It turns out that both loud hysterics and demonstrative ignoring burn bridges just as effectively. Many of us have a favorite psychological torture — walking around with a pout for days and, when asked why, squeezing out «nothing» through clenched teeth. Together with a psychologist, we looked into why adults resort to manipulation and why the silent treatment is guaranteed to destroy a family.
Why silence doesn«t work
Demonstrative silence often seems less harmful than a stormy scandal, but in reality it remains pure manipulation.
«The goal of such silence is not to understand oneself, but to make the partner feel guilty,» explains psychologist and founder of the family values school «Tochka G» Yevgeniya Aleksandrova. «For example, a woman expects the man to start apologizing, giving gifts, trying to win her over. And often he does indeed come with flowers or a reconciliatory gesture. But that doesn«t mean he understood the core of the conflict. Often the man just wants to stop the tension and restore the usual order.»
That is why the silent game does not solve the problem. The cause of the conflict does not go away, and the couple develops a dangerous pattern: the woman is silent, the man smooths things over with a gift, and then everything repeats.
How «closed mouth» differs from playing silent
For those who do not like stormy arguments, there is another technique that differs from manipulation by silence. It is called «closed mouth,» and at first glance it also involves a pause, but its meaning is fundamentally different.
«The silent treatment is needed to punish the partner and make them feel guilty. «Closed mouth» helps to preserve dignity, not stoop to insults, and not destroy the relationship with unnecessary words,» emphasizes Yevgeniya Aleksandrova. «It is not waiting for the man to crawl with apologies, but the woman«s decision not to prove the obvious and not to engage in an emotional fight.»
In this case, the partner — man or woman — does not argue, does not make excuses, does not lecture, and does not try to change the other. The person sees the situation, draws conclusions, and shows their attitude through actions. At the same time, they do not walk around with a displeased face, do not pretend to suffer, and do not sit waiting for a call. On the contrary, this person switches to themselves: work, errands, rest, friends, sports, hobbies, their own interesting life.
Why it preserves respect
The main value of the «closed mouth» technique is resolving conflict without humiliation. In a scandal, a woman can say too much, and the man will later use her harsh words against her. Or vice versa. In manipulative silence, a person loses stability because they are still waiting for the partner«s reaction. In «closed mouth,» they stay in contact with themselves.
«This does not mean you have to tolerate any behavior. If a man has crossed boundaries, devalued, been rude, or acted unacceptably, the woman is not obliged to explain basic things to him. She can show that she is not okay with it through behavior: not engage in the conflict, not feed his irritation, not save the situation at the expense of herself,» says the psychologist. «But if a woman has «closed her mouth» but continues to wait for him to understand everything, that is the same manipulation.»
When the technique is useful in everyday life
«Closed mouth» works not only in conflicts. It also helps in everyday situations where a woman risks becoming a «mom» for the man again. For example, when she wants to lecture him on how to drive a car, how to wash dishes, how to interact with friends, how to handle household matters. In such moments, it«s better to let the man figure things out himself rather than turn on control mode.
Another situation is when a man comes home tired, irritated, and speaking through clenched teeth. Instead of interrogations and confrontations, you can give him time to recover. Not everything requires an immediate conversation.
The third case is provocation. If a woman feels that her partner is deliberately dragging her into a conflict, the best response is not to give in. Sometimes a pause is stronger than any argument.
Punishment by silence destroys trust because it turns the relationship into a game: one is guilty, the other waits for compensation. A scandal also does not solve the problem because it reduces respect and increases mutual grievances.
«The «closed mouth» technique is a pause without manipulation, a way to preserve dignity and not say too much,» emphasizes Yevgeniya Aleksandrova. «It helps a woman not to beg for respect, not to raise a man, and not to become a «mom» in the couple.»
Mature relationships are built not on shouting or punishment, but on respect, boundaries, and actions. Sometimes it really is better to stay silent — but it is also important that this silence is not a weapon, but a manifestation of inner strength and self-respect.
