Woman Buys Apartment from Ex-Husband to Avoid Eviction

A mother of three from Chelyabinsk managed to keep the apartment from which her ex-husband was trying to evict her and their three children. To do so, Yulia had to buy the home from him. We provide details on the resolution of this high-profile dispute.

«Now I Will Be Repaying Debts for 10 Years»
A 48-year-old factory worker, after separating from his wife, demanded through court that she and their three common children, including a four-year-old daughter, be evicted from the apartment. The couple had lived together for over 20 years and bought the home with a mortgage in 2020. The loan was taken out in the man«s name. Their relationship was built on trust, so they did not officially register the marriage. After the breakup, the common-law husband told Yulia that the apartment belonged only to him, and she and the children had to move out.
«I realized that buying the apartment was the only possible way out. Even if the children had been awarded some shares, he would still have a part of the apartment. And the conflict would have continued. In the end, we agreed on a sum that suited both me and him. I don«t want to say the exact amount, but it is more than 1 million rubles ($11,100 at current rates),» the woman said.
According to Yulia, her ex-husband had been seeking monetary compensation from the very beginning.
«He needed to solve his financial problems. It turns out he solved them at our expense,» she believes.
As Yulia explained, to complete the transaction she first had to pay off the mortgage to lift the encumbrance on the apartment, and then transfer the agreed amount to her ex-husband. She borrowed the money from acquaintances.
«Now I need about 10 more years to repay the debts,» Yulia assured. «We signed a settlement agreement in court and concluded a purchase contract. The transaction is registered, I have received the documents. Now I am the sole owner.»
«Daughter Said She Has No Father»
And although the conflict was formally resolved, human relationships appear to be destroyed. According to Yulia, this situation hit the children hardest.
«He doesn«t communicate with the children at all. Our daughter Polina after all this said she no longer has a father,» the mother of many shared. «And the youngest daughter understood everything. I thought little children don»t understand their parents« problems. It turns out they do. My daughter came up to me and said: »Dad is bad. Dad sued us.«»
«No Benefit for Me»
The ex-husband himself believes the settlement agreement is quite fair. According to him, the apartment was registered in his name, he paid the mortgage, so he considered the home exclusively his property.
«Yes, the apartment was de facto mine because the mortgage was in my name. But there is no benefit for me here,» the man said.
At the same time, the ex-husband claims that Yulia bought the apartment for a relatively modest sum — 500,000 rubles ($5,600 at current rates). And he would be happy to communicate with the children, but he is now on blacklists.
«My ex-wife turned the children against me. I call, I want to meet, I am always for it, but they tell me I«m on a blacklist. Well, it»s clear: they got the apartment already. Why do they need me now?» the ex-head of the family believes.
He added that he will spend the proceeds on new housing.
«I want to buy an apartment and use the money as a down payment. I have a new family now, everything is fine,» he concluded.
74.RU reported on this family story in February. Yulia and her husband met in 2002. They had two children — a son Misha and a daughter Polina. The spouses were in an official marriage, then separated, and after a while began living together again, but did not re-register the relationship. In 2020, they took out a mortgage and bought a three-room apartment in the Leninsky District — the loan amount was 1.3 million rubles ($14,400 at current rates). Four years ago, the couple had a youngest daughter. But over time, problems arose again, and the couple decided to finally separate. After that, the head of the family declared that the apartment belonged to him and demanded that Yulia and the children vacate the home.
