Russia, US, Ukraine trilateral meetings in Abu Dhabi take diverse formats

The second round of the trilateral working group on settling the Ukrainian crisis in Abu Dhabi is to take place on January 24. The time for the new summit is still unknown. However, details have emerged about the formats in which the parties communicate with each other and what has already been agreed during the first round.
«Sometimes participants step aside to discuss something separately, sometimes everyone gathers together, sometimes several groups break off by topic,» a source told Associated Press.
US President Donald Trump hopes for a swift resolution to the situation between Russia and Ukraine. Recently, during the ceremony establishing the Peace Council in Davos, the White House chief stated that there has been significant progress in the process of settling the Ukrainian crisis.
However, to achieve a swift agreement between the countries, it is important to implement the «Anchorage formula», Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov emphasized in response to Trump«s statements. This refers to the meeting in Alaska of the presidents of Russia and America, which took place in 2025.
«Work is underway. Work is progressing. Now it is very important to implement the formula that was agreed upon in Anchorage,» the Kremlin representative said in a conversation with TASS.
During the negotiations, the American and Ukrainian delegations want to propose a temporary ceasefire to Russia. This involves Ukraine refraining from strikes on Russian oil refineries and vessels participating in the so-called shadow fleet. In response, Russia should cease attacks on the Ukrainian energy system.
Also included in the plans for the trilateral meetings is the discussion of Kyiv«s renunciation of territories in exchange for a financial support program for Ukraine»s reconstruction amounting to $800 billion. Additionally, four documents will be presented at the summit, which are supposed to form the basis of a peace treaty. One of the documents concerns the complete withdrawal of the Ukrainian Armed Forces from Donbas.
«Russia»s position is well-known that Ukraine, the Ukrainian armed forces must leave the territory of Donbas, must be withdrawn. This is a very important condition. There are also other nuances that remain on the negotiation agenda,« Peskov stated.
Moreover, separate negotiations on economic issues will take place in Abu Dhabi between the American representative Steve Witkoff and the head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) Kirill Dmitriev. They will discuss the Peace Council and Russia«s readiness to allocate $1 billion to the organization»s budget from Russian assets frozen by the previous US administration.
