Kremlin deems expecting quick Ukraine talks results a mistake

Peskov describes the Ukraine negotiations as complex, with no expectation of friendliness from Kyiv.
It would be a mistake to expect high effectiveness from the trilateral contacts on Ukraine; there is a lot of work ahead. This was stated by the press secretary of the President of Russia, Dmitry Peskov.
‘It would be a mistake to expect high effectiveness from the initial contacts. This is a very complex matter, with difficult issues on the agenda. However, the fact that these contacts started constructively can be viewed positively. But there is very serious work ahead,’ said Peskov.
According to him, friendliness is unlikely in the negotiations on Ukraine, but if they are proceeding, then efforts must be made to achieve something. The continuation of trilateral contacts is scheduled for next week, but no exact date has been set yet.
The press secretary of the President of Russia also urged not to discuss individual provisions of the negotiation process on Ukraine, as this is incorrect. Peskov added that the ‘Anchorage Formula’ was discussed. Under it, corresponding understanding has been reached with the USA and President Donald Trump.
For now, there are no contacts with the American leader in Vladimir Putin«s schedule, added Peskov. However, such a conversation can be organized promptly.
On January 23–24, trilateral consultations on resolving the Ukrainian conflict were held in Abu Dhabi. Representatives of Russia, the USA, and Ukraine participated. The meetings took place in a maximally closed format without the presence of the press. Presumably, conditions for a potential peaceful settlement were discussed, including security issues and territorial disputes. The President of Ukraine after the consultations stated that Kyiv ‘under no circumstances’ will abandon claims to lands.
