39-year-old deputy governor of Nizhny Novgorod Region, Oleg Berkovich, reported that in early 2026, he experienced an exacerbation of an old back injury sustained after celebrating the 800th anniversary of Nizhny Novgorod. The official explained the need for urgent surgical intervention by saying, «because it was already impossible to walk.» He made this statement on his Telegram channel.
The intervention was performed at the Burdenko Center. «The operation took place at the Burdenko Center. The official was discharged from the medical institution. He promised himself to make sport a permanent part of his life after completing rehabilitation, noting that what happened «sobered him up.» Berkovich also thanked his wife for her support, patience, and help during the preparation for the operation. At the end of last December, he addressed issues related to the construction of a new theater and eco-park on the Grebnoy Canal in Nizhny Novgorod, which will be part of a comprehensive development of the area.
