Rostov residents reveal absurd job rejection stories

The editorial staff of 161.RU asked its readers to share the unexpected reasons they were denied jobs. It turned out that applicants often face ageism — age discrimination — with complaints coming from people of various generations. But there were even stranger reasons cited, such as an unsuitable zodiac sign. We have collected interesting comments from readers.

«They said that at my age I would soon get married and go on maternity leave, and then they would have to look for another employee.»
«That»s a classic. «No children? You»ll go on maternity leave. Rejected.« And there»s also: «No loans, no mortgage? No incentive to work. Rejected.»«
«I was also rejected when I was 40: »You are too old.«»
«I was once rejected because I »didn«t show results at my previous job.» When I started to find out who they got the recommendation from, it turned out they hadn«t asked the head of the company»s branch network (I worked as a branch director for a federal company), but a person who was two linear levels below me and had worked as a regular manager at the head office for only six months. They might as well have asked the cleaner, Granny Masha; she could have said she«d never seen me there. It was for the best. But the most interesting part is that the person who gave me that reference was caught red-handed taking kickbacks another six months later and was fired on the spot. Karma, right? That»s the level of HR for you.«
«About 25 years ago, I went for an interview at a large company, and my ex-girlfriend turned out to be the HR manager. She told me right at the door — you are not suitable for us.»
«I wanted to change careers for a year and take a break from mental work. I found a job opening at a pizzeria for cutting cheese. They rejected me. The reason was a killer: »You are almost 50, and we have a young team. You will be uncomfortable.« And I just wanted to cut cheese all day and earn 70 grand (70,000 rubles, about $770 at current rates). But I didn»t give up — I went to the interview. I convinced them that I am a good and punctual worker, I don«t need to go on maternity leave, and I don»t need to take sick leave for a small child. That the 45–50 age group is the most disciplined segment of the workforce. And in the end, they agreed. But I turned it down because the salary was advertised as 70,000, but it turned out to be 50,000. Well, at least I stood up for the position of older workers who are 50.«
