Readers shared stories of unexpected job rejections. Many noted age discrimination, which affects both young and mature professionals. However, there were also completely absurd reasons, including zodiac signs.

One candidate heard: «They said that at my age, I»ll soon get married and go on maternity leave, and they«d have to look for an employee again.» Another commentator added: «That»s classic. «No children? You»ll go on maternity leave. Rejected.« And there»s also: «No loans, no mortgages? No incentive to work. Rejected.»« A woman in her 40s was told: »You«re too old.»

Another job seeker was rejected due to lack of results at a previous workplace. It turned out that the reference was requested not from his supervisor, but from an employee two positions lower, who had worked at the company for only six months. «It»s for the better,« he commented. »Notably, that person was later fired for taking bribes.«

Another case happened 25 years ago: «I come to a large company for an interview 25 years ago, and the HR manager turns out to be my ex-girlfriend. She tells me right at the door — you»re not a good fit for us.«

A woman around 50 wanted to get a job cutting cheese at a pizzeria, but was rejected: «You»re almost 50, and we have a young team. You«ll be uncomfortable.» She managed to get an interview by convincing the employer of her discipline, but she herself refused the vacancy when it turned out that the salary was lower than promised.
