Avoid 2026 Layoffs: Know the Risks and Prepare

Burnout at work leads to decreased productivity.
In 2026, employees who spend the most time at the workplace may be at risk of layoffs. This outcome was warned by Vladislav Bykhanov, managing partner of the recruitment company Cornerstone.
Who will be fired and who will be hired
“If you can create more ‘parts’ in a short period than your colleagues, then you are more efficient and are unlikely to be laid off. Meanwhile, those who spend days and nights at the workplace but do not bring tangible results risk being left behind,” the expert explained.
According to him, in conditions of fierce competition, businesses will value not the number of hours spent in the office, but efficiency and time management skills. Bykhanov noted in an interview with Gazeta.Ru that, according to research, 85% of employees experience burnout from a meaningless race, which leads to decreased productivity.
In addition to efficiency, “soft skills” will become critically important. These include the ability to work in a team, flexibility and the ability to adapt to change, as well as emotional intelligence.
“Those who combine high productivity with these developed soft skills are unlikely to lose their jobs this year, as such employees have maximum value for business,” stated the HR expert.
How to remain in demand
Bykhanov gave practical recommendations. He advises that when you sit down at your workplace, focus only on tasks.
“If you sit down at your work computer, work; if you need a break — get up and leave the office,” he advised.
To emphasize your efficiency in an interview and not be known as a “seat warmer,” the expert recommends using specific formulations. For example:
- “I strive to ensure that every minute of my working time is used to the maximum benefit.”
- “My goal is not just to be present at the workplace, but to bring real benefit to the company.”
- “I am proud that I can combine high productivity with the ability to work in a team.”
He emphasized that in a world where results are valued, such phrases will be your trump card. Being just a workaholic is no longer the path to success, Bykhanov summarized.
