Ombudsman injured in fatal crash awaits another surgery

Nikolai Khlyzov, the human rights commissioner in Zabaikalsky Krai who was injured in a fatal car accident, is still in the hospital and awaiting another surgery. This was reported to a Chita.Ru correspondent on 21 January by the Minister of Health of Zabaikalye, Oksana Nemakina.
According to Nemakina, Nikolai Khlyzov is doing well, his condition is satisfactory, and he is receiving all necessary treatment.
Almost a month has passed since the accident—it occurred on 24 December on the regional road Darasun–Solntsevo in the Karymsky district. Nikolai Khlyzov was taken to the Zabaikalsky Regional Clinical Hospital in serious condition and was admitted to intensive care. Khlyzov«s driver died in the ambulance despite attempts by medics to resuscitate him. Colleagues of the ombudsman said that he had gone on a business trip to the Karymsky district, but they did not know the details of the incident.
The police opened a criminal case regarding the accident. The State Traffic Inspectorate and police did not report what car Khlyzov«s vehicle collided with, whether anyone in the second car was injured, or whether the car went into a ditch after the accident. Also, the police did not answer who, preliminarily, is at fault for the accident.
On 27 December it became known that Nikolai Khlyzov was transferred from intensive care to the neurosurgery department and was improving. Later, the head of the regional Ministry of Health, Oksana Nemakina, reported that the ombudsman was in the trauma department. He himself replied that he could not tell about the accident because he does not remember how it happened.
