‘Mom can be transported in a week,’ says son of teacher from Tatarstan in coma in Egypt

Olga Gardikhanova, a teacher from the urban-type settlement of Alekseyevskoye who fell into a coma during a vacation in Egypt, may be transported to her homeland in about a week. Her son Ruslan Gardikhanov reported this to the editorial office of 116.RU.

‘At the Egyptian embassy, they told us that mom can be transported in about a week, the doctors said that to them. Now we are deciding how the transportation will proceed: whether the state will help us with something or we will have to turn to a private organization. For now, we are dealing with this issue,’ our interlocutor said.

Transport companies were asking for more than 13 million rubles (approximately $130,000 at current rates) for medical transportation — for the family, this is an unaffordable amount. Then friends and relatives of Olga organized a fundraiser for treatment and transportation: they spread the information in local public groups, and through joint efforts, they managed to collect part of the necessary sum.

‘People are helping, we have collected the sum, but so far it«s small — a little over a million rubles (approximately $10,000 at current rates). This is very little,’ he noted.

Recall that the 51-year-old teacher fell ill on January 4 immediately after arriving in Sharm el-Sheikh — right at the airport. The woman was hospitalized, doctors diagnosed a stroke and extensive hemorrhage. Now Gardikhanova is in a coma, she underwent surgery.

Stay in the Egyptian hospital costs approximately 2–2.5 thousand dollars per day, and the validity period of the medical insurance will soon expire. The woman«s family returned to Tatarstan, appealed to the authorities and the Ministry of Health, and hopes for help.
