Kansk Declares Day of Mourning for Children Killed

Konstantin Kovalev, head of the Kansk Municipal District, declared February 6 a day of mourning across the entire district. He announced this on his social media.

The reason, Kovalev wrote, was a fatal crash that occurred on the evening of 2 February in the Rybinsky District (Krasnoyarsk Krai). Among the victims were natives of the Kansk District.

Therefore, tomorrow state flags will be flown at half-staff across the district, and organizations are recommended to refrain from holding entertainment or mass cultural events.

As a reminder, on the evening of 2 February a terrible accident occurred in the Rybinsky District — an Iveco truck towing a modular home from Kansk towards Krasnoyarsk lost its trailer; the trailer detached, crossed into oncoming traffic, and crashed into a passenger Gazelle minibus. The driver has already been sent to a pre-trial detention center; he was driving without a license.

The minibus was driven by a 52-year-old driver, and inside were 13 people: candidates for admission to the departmental university of the Federal Penitentiary Service (FSIN) and accompanying persons. The group was returning to Kansk after preparatory training for admission in Krasnoyarsk.

As a result of the crash, five people died — four teenagers and a 31-year-old female escort. Several other people were hospitalized; according to Health Minister Alexey Konovalenko, three teenagers were discharged from the Kansk Interdistrict Hospital. Psychologists will work with them.

Four more victims of the crash are in Krasnoyarsk«s 20th Hospital named after Berzon. Two of them — a young man and a young woman — are not causing concern; the woman will be discharged soon, while the man will remain in the hospital for planned treatment.

Two victims are in «serious condition»; one young woman had to be transported by air ambulance to Moscow, to the Russian Children«s Clinical Hospital named after Pirogov (RDCB), and the other remained in the hospital.
