Court refuses to detain teen in terror case
A schoolboy from St. Petersburg has become a defendant in a terrorism case after damaging railway equipment. The court did not send him to a pre-trial detention center, but he will not attend the September 1 school lineup.
As the joint press service of St. Petersburg courts clarified on 21 July, 14-year-old Yevgeny was detained the day before. He was charged with committing a terrorist act. According to investigators, on the evening of 19 July, the boy set fire to relay and battery cabinets on the stretch between Shuvаlovo and Pargolovo stations, after which he fled.
The investigation insisted on taking him into custody, but the Vyborg District Court made a different decision. The suspect was released to his home with restrictions on certain actions: until 19 September inclusive, he is forbidden to leave his residence.
On 20 July, a fire occurred at two gas stations in the Vsevolozhsk district of the Leningrad region. Another teenager is suspected of arson, but the exact classification of his actions has not yet been reported.
