Court refuses to detain teen in St. Petersburg terror case

A 14-year-old resident of St. Petersburg has become a defendant in a terrorism case after damaging railway infrastructure. The court did not send him to a detention center, but he will not attend the September 1 holiday school assembly — the preventive measure forbids him from leaving his home.
On July 21, the joint press service of St. Petersburg courts reported that 14-year-old Yevgeny had been detained the previous day. He is charged with committing a terrorist act. According to investigators, on the evening of July 19 at around 22:00, the teenager set fire to relay and battery cabinets on the Shuvalovo–Pargolovo stretch of railway, then fled.
Investigators requested that the teenager be taken into custody, but the Vyborgsky District Court refused. Instead, a restriction order was imposed: until September 19, Yevgeny must stay at home and is not allowed to leave his residence.
A day earlier, on July 20, two gas stations caught fire in the Vsevolozhsky District of Leningrad Oblast. Law enforcement is checking whether the teenager was involved. What specific charges he may face has not yet been disclosed.
