While the world of superfoods debates whether expensive supplements or familiar garden produce is better, new research tips the scales toward the latter. Expert for TOLYATTY.ru, a doctor, athlete, and advocate of a healthy lifestyle, believes two summer favorites—raspberries and cherries—offer a powerful synergistic effect for the body, tackling multiple fronts in the fight for health.

«Raspberry: a multifunctional defender. This aromatic berry is a true polyphenol cocktail. Studies show that raspberries lower blood pressure and levels of »bad« cholesterol thanks to potassium, while its low glycemic index makes it safe even for diabetics and athletes on a cut,» said Sergey Tetyushkin.

But its benefits don«t end there:

Vitamin C stimulates collagen production, slowing skin aging, while lutein and zeaxanthin filter blue light, reducing the risk of age-related macular degeneration and dry eyes—a must-have for office workers;

  • Anthocyanins improve blood flow to the brain, enhancing concentration and lowering risks of neurodegeneration (the gradual loss of nerve cells (neurons) in the brain or spinal cord);

  • Fiber and prebiotic properties feed the microbiota, strengthening immunity.

    The doctor notes that regular consumption reduces the risk of obesity, hypertension, and dyslipidemia, an imbalance of lipids (fats) in the blood.

    «The anti-inflammatory effect of polyphenols even helps with osteoarthritis,» assures Dr. Sergey Tetyushkin.

    While raspberries «work» during the day, cherries take the night shift. Just 1–2 glasses of tart cherry juice a day provides a natural dose of melatonin, gently regulating circadian rhythms and aiding with insomnia. As with raspberries, anthocyanins work wonders:

    They relieve inflammation and pain in arthritis, reducing the risk of gout attacks;

  • They speed up muscle recovery after workouts;

  • They lower systolic («upper») blood pressure and LDL («bad») cholesterol levels;

  • In small experiments, the juice even improved short-term memory and reduced stress levels in adults.

    «The main thing is not to pour sugar over the berries, or all the benefits will vanish. Also, be cautious with raspberries if you have an allergy to strawberries or peaches (cross-reactivity is possible). Cherry juice should be unsweetened and should not replace medication, especially with diabetes—consult a doctor here,» said Sergey Tetyushkin.

    He adds that it«s ideal to eat them raw

    If you«re looking for a budget alternative to supplements, raspberries and cherries form an ideal tandem. One gives energy and mental clarity, the other—deep sleep and recovery. Eat them raw, add to smoothies and oatmeal, and feel free to use frozen versions in winter.
