Doctors at Saratov Regional Hospital successfully operated on a young patient with a giant ovarian cystoma. The 26-year-old woman«s abdomen grew to resemble a pregnant woman»s, she could not exercise and experienced shortness of breath. This was reported in the Telegram channel of the Saratov Regional Clinical Hospital (OKB).

«The tumor was comparable to a full-term pregnancy. We performed an organ-preserving operation because the patient is young and plans to have children in the future. We removed only the cystoma and associated tissues, preserving the ability to become pregnant,» said Kristina Sushko, a doctor in gynecological department No. 2. «Although the operation was planned, we did not expect the cystoma to be so large. In my practice, this was the largest tumor so far.»

The cystoma, 40 centimeters in diameter, was fused to the intestine and bladder, which complicated the surgery. But the operation was successful, and the woman has already been discharged from the hospital.

The doctors explained the difference between a cystoma and a cyst. A cystoma is a benign tumor that grows through cell division and can turn into cancer. A cyst is a tumor-like formation (a fluid-filled sac). Cysts can disappear on their own.

«There are cysts that we operate on. Depending on their size and the patient«s complaints, conservative treatment and monitoring by a specialist are possible,» commented Kristina Sushko. «A cystoma must undergo surgical treatment.»
