Salmonella Outbreak in Nyagan Kindergarten Closes Sverdlovsk Plant

A meat processing workshop in the Sverdlovsk Oblast was closed for 90 days after a salmonella outbreak at a kindergarten in Nyagan (Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug — Ugra). Unsanitary conditions at the plant may have caused the mass illness among children. This was reported by the Telegram channel «Courts of Sverdlovsk Oblast».

«By court order, the operations of Premium LLC in the village of Vostochny, Kamyshlovsky District (Sverdlovsk Oblast), have been suspended. The measure was taken after an epidemiological investigation by Rospotrebnadzor (Federal Service for Surveillance on Consumer Rights Protection and Human Wellbeing). The agency established a link between 20 cases of salmonella at a preschool institution in the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug — Ugra and the activities of the Sverdlovsk enterprise,» the statement said.

The decision was based on gross violations of sanitary and epidemiological legislation revealed during inspections. The plant lacked refrigeration and freezing equipment, an adequate supply of hot and cold water, cleaning and disinfecting agents, and the electric meat grinder attachments had traces of rust.

«The workshop was unsanitary: floors were sticky with grease, and accumulations of dead flies were found on windows and light fixtures. Among other violations, there were no conditions for personal hygiene of staff: no hand-washing sinks, and the door to the only toilet was nailed shut. The sewer system was designed with defects, creating a risk of wastewater backflow into wash basins intended for processing equipment, utensils, and containers, which does not exclude the risk of food product contamination,» the court added.

Recall that the kindergarten «Teremok» in Nyagan was reopened after the salmonella outbreak. The institution«s operations were suspended until February 2. After the mass infection of children, law enforcement opened a criminal case. The infection was diagnosed in 26 pupils.
